Trying to get decent in Korean, 한 단어 at a time

5k known words in Kimchi Reader!

Last updated: 06-07-2025

So, I've finally hit 5k known words in Kimchi Reader. A result that I'm pretty proud of!

How did we get here?

I've been using Migaku to study Korean from 2022 until mid 2024. Around that time I discovered Kimchi Reader and have used that for my studies ever since. Main reason is that the lemmatizer of Kimchi Reader is much better than Migaku's (for Korean), so reading became a lot more enjoyable (fast + accurate lookups = profit!).

These were my stats when I imported all the words that I mined through Migaku from Anki into Kimchi Reader.

I did this import around a year ago. Although it does not look like much, I'm very happy with the increase of ~1000 known words since that time. If I had to come up with reasons as to why only 1000 words, it's probably due to:

Of course, hindsight is 20/20, and I'm glad that I've now been able to find a pace where I'm making good progress while also having fun!

What's next?

The next goal is easy: 10k known words in Kimchi Reader! 10k has always been the milestone I've been wanting to reach at some point. I have this idea in my head that 10k words will get you to a level where you can understand most Korean you encounter. That's probably not the case, but I'd like to see for myself!

With the rate I'm currently progressing at, I hope to reach that goal before the end of 2025. I'm going to keep focusing on reading for now! Check out my list of books if you are interested in the Korean books I'm reading at the moment.
